It was also during his tenure when Tigers claimed their first SEC title in 1960. After Eaves, Sonny Smith is the most successful coach of the team who coached for 11 seasons. It was under his leadership when the team made it to their first SEC Tournament Championship. In 1984 and 1989, he was also crowned the title of Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year. Currently the team is being coached by Tony Barbee, who took charge in 2010.
