In 1959, it was announced by Lamar Hunt that they American Football League will be formed. At that time Ralph Wilson, made his mind of inducing his team in the newly formed League. Initially he tried to form the team in Miami but since he failed there, he moved to Buffalo, New York, which came out to be the birth place of Professional Football team called Buffalo Bills, which currently plays for the Eastern Division of American Football Conference in the National Football League (NFL).

After team's formation on October 28, 1959, Bills became the 8th member that joined AFL. In AFL, Bills took rough start as it became the only team ever to lose to Canadian Football League team, Hamilton Tiger Cats. Later Bills performance improved and in 1964 and 1965 they also won AFL championships, and in addition to that became the only team ever to appear in AFL championship for three consecutive years.

As the AFL became a part of NFL in a result of a merger in 1970, Buffalo Bills became a member of NFL since then. During the 1973 season, team got its new quarterback, Joe Ferguson, who was also voted NFL MVP as he rushed 2000 yards in the same season, and because of that team had its first winning record since 1966. Next year in 1974, team appeared in the playoffs for the first time, but unfortunately lost to Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1st round. Buffalo Bills won their first NFL playoff game, in the season followed by their season opener, as they beat New York Jets; however their victory was followed by their defeat in the second round by Cincinnati Bengals.

Bills roster welcomed Jim Kelly in 1983 Draft, as a replacement to Joe Ferguson, however Kelly decided to join United States Football League, and in 1986 he came back to join Bills after the downfall of USFL. In 1988's season, Bills made it to Super Bowl XXV as they defeated Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Raiders in the playoff game, but they lost to New York Giants in the Super Bowl. In 1991's season Bills once again made it to Super bowl XXVI after defeating Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos and also won AFC championship, however they lost again in Super Bowl, this time Bills lost to Washington Red Skins. They made their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance in the following season, as they attained victories against Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers, but yet again they lost in the Super Bowl, this time they lost to Dallas Cowboys.

By the beginning of the year 2008, Bills became the first team ever to be playing their home games out side U.S, as bills signed an agreement to play one of its December's home games in Rogers Center in Ontario for the next five years. Bills play rest of their home games at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Apart from that Ralph Wilson has also signed an agreement to lease Buffalo Bills Ted Rogers, owner of the Rogers Communications, for $78 Million.
