Denver Nuggets are a basketball team that are a member of the NBA and play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. Based in Colorado, they were called Denver Larks at the time of their inception in 1967, when they were a charter franchise in the ABA. Their name was later changed to Rockets, just before their first season. The team established itself as one of the most successful acts in the league. The Nuggets changed their name yet again, before joining the NBA in the merger of 1976. In 1967, a group in Kansas City was awarded an ABA charter franchise, headed by a businessman of Southern California, James Trindle. Trindle could not find a befitting arena in Kansas, and was advised by George Mikan, the league commissioner, to move the team to Denver. Trindle deiced to name a former NBA player and Denver native Vince Boryla as the general manager, following which Trindle relocated his team to Denver calling it Denver Larks based on the state birds of Colorado. The Trindle group faced undercapitalization issues due to which, eventually the team was sold to Bill Ringsby, a trucking magnate who renamed the franchise the Rockets. It was a few years later when the team’s name would be changed to Denver Nuggets

The Denver team was among the four ABA franchises that got into NBA, alongside San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers, and New York Nets. The Nets and Nuggets had applied in 1975 to become part of the NBA, but owing to a court order they had to remain in the ABA for some time.
