In its early years, Golden State Warriors played under different names as a result of relocation. It emerged as Philadelphia Warriors then it moved to San Francisco and was named San Francisco Warriors. In 1971 the Warriors started playing under their current name.
One of the reasons behind the team’s strong start was the presence of players like Joe Fulks, Paul Arizin, Neil Johnston, Wilt Chamberlain, Rick Barry, Jamaal Wilkes, Phil Smith and Michael Bryson. Joe Fulks literally helped the warriors bag the inaugural championship (1946-47 season). Whereas, others contributed to the 1955-56 and 1974- 75 championships. The Warriors dominated the scene for many years until 1971 when their performance faltered a bit due to the loss of leading players and retirements. They got back on the track in 1987 when standout players such as Sleepy Floyd, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullen stepped in.
The warriors have been honored with countless individual awards in the past. NBA Coach of the Year was given to Alex Hannum and Don Nelson in 1964 and 1992. Gilbert Arenas and Monta Ellis walked away with NBA Most Improved Player of the Year award in 2003 and 2007. While, Joe Fulks, Neil Johnston, Rick Barry, Paul Arizin and Wilt Chamberlain have been among the NBA Scoring Champions. In recent years Marc Jackson, Jason Richardson, Stephen Curry, and Klay Thompson have been awarded with Rookie of the Year awards.
The team has seen enjoying success in recent years. Dorell Wright emerged as a headliner in 2011 for placing records against Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers. He holds a record for making the most 3-point shots in 2010-11 season placing 194. He has also left Jason Richardson behind who holds the record of scoring 183 in the 2005-06 season.
