The Houston Rockets inception can be traced back to the year 1967 when they were conceived in San Diego. The franchise was an expansion side that entered the NBA for the first during the 1967-1968 season. The team was known as the San Diego Rockets at that time, a name inspired the by the rocket and missile development program in the city. The Rockets, led by their star new recruit Elvin Hayes, reached the playoffs in only their second season. Two long term singings and future Houston Rockets legends Rudy Tomjanovich and Calvin Murphy were signed during the draft in 1970. The current owner Robert Breitbard sold the franchise in 1971to Texas Sports Investments and the new owners immediately shifted the team to Houston in 1971. The re-location was a very historical move because for the first time in history, the state of Texas now had its own NBA side.

The Houston Rockets move to the new city called for some changes as well to take the team a further forward. Under the guidance of their new coach, Johnny Egan the team not only qualified for the playoffs but beat the New York Knicks to go to the second round. The fans in the city were starting to take a liking to their side and started buying Houston Rockets tickets to sellout a lot of games including every playoff game played at home. Another future legend, Moses Malone, was added to the team and the strengthening paid off when the franchise won its first ever division crown in 1977. The team was bought by George Maloof in the year 1979 and the NBA restructuring sent the Houston Rockets to the Midwest Division. The team went on to win the conference title soon afterwards in 1981. Calvin Murphy broke two records on the way.

Malone won the MVP award the next season but was sold to the Philadelphia 76ers in pre-season. In the ’84 draft the Houston Rockets signed their greatest ever player, Hakeem Olajuwon. Hakeem started to make his mark right from the word go when in his first season he became the runner-up NBA Rookie of the Year. 1985-1986 season turned out be even more successful and the team were crowned Midwest champions. The Duo of Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson was dubbed the Twin Towers for their lethal partnership. More rebuilding was done in 1990-1991 season to bring in players like Sam Cassell, Vernon Mawell and Otis Thorpe etc to provide support for Olajuwon and take the team to another level.

Rudy Tomjanovich took over the coaching duties and the Houston Rockets went to the semifinals of their conference championship. The start of the 1993-1994 season started sensationally when the team equaled an NBA record of fifteen straight wins. Led by Hakeem, the team beat the Phoenix Suns in the playoffs to meet the Knicks in the finals. The Houston Rockets beat their opponents by four games to three to win their first ever NBA title. Olajuwon was named MVP and Defensive Player of the Year as well as being crowned the Finals MVP. The next season didn’t start off too well but like true champions they picked up their game when it mattered most to reach the NBA finals against the Orlando Magic. The Houston Rockets won the finals by winning the first four games straight and became the first ever team in history to win the coveted prize as a sixth seeded team.

The next few years weren’t too kind to the Houston Rockets and its supporters but they are now beginning to rise again. After a few years in the doldrums they are ready to mount a serious challenge to reclaim their place as one of the top teams in NBA. Backed to the hilt by its fans buying Houston Rockets tickets to support their team, it is this very optimism that augers well for the future of this sleeping giant.
