The Iowa Hawkeyes are the many teams that make up the athletics program of the University of Iowa, located at Iowa City. This is one of the finest athletic programs in the NCAA Division I and is a member of the Big Ten Conference. It is led by Gary Barta, the athletics director, and is home to twenty four different varsity teams. Of these, the football teams practices at the Kinnick Stadium whereas the basketball teams at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The baseball teams play ball at the Duane Banks Field. Two more arenas facilitate the program; the Backwith Boathouse and Iowa Field House. These teams are cheered on by Herky the Hawk, the official mascot. There are thirteen women sports teams and eleven men sports teams in the Iowa Hawkeyes athletics program. One of its most successful sports in wrestling in which it has won twenty three National Championships and thirty four Big Ten Conference Championships. National Championships have also been won in field hockey, gymnastics and football. They have also made it to the Basketball Final Four a record four times; three of these are by the men’s team and one by the women’s team. The baseball team has also appeared in the College World Series and the women’s softball team has appeared four times in the Women’s College World Series.
The Iowa Hawkeyes men’s sports are Baseball, Basketball, Cross country, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Swimming, and Tennis, Indoor track, Outdoor track and Wrestling. The women’s sports are Basketball, Cross country, Field hockey, Golf, Gymnastics, Rowing, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Indoor track, Outdoor track and Volleyball. The team with the most National NCAA Championships is the wrestling team with twenty three championships won, the last three of which were won in 2008, 2009 and 2010. The men’s gymnastics team won a National Championship in 1969 and the football team in 1958. The women’s hockey team also won a championship in 1986.
The Iowa Hawkeyes have won twenty six National Championships and one hundred and five Conference Championships.
