The origins of New York Yankees
go back to late 1900, when the president of Western League, Ban Johnson brought changes in the structure of the league, with the additions of teams to three Eastern cities that were to comprise the American League. At the time, New York Giants from National League had enough influence to keep out the AL, and blocked any possibilities of putting a team in NYC. A team was instead put in the city of Baltimore, which was not included when the NL in 1900, initially took in twelve to eight teams.
In 1911, when the team was known as the Highlanders, the Polo Grounds which was the home ground of the Giants burned down, so that Highlanders offered them to play their home games in Hilltop Park while their previous grounds were being fixed. During this time the relation between the two teams improved, so that in 1913 the Highlanders were soon invited to relocate to the newly reconstructed Polo Grounds. Since now the team was playing on the Harlem River, which far from high-altitude, made the name of highlanders
inapplicable. During the time the media already adopted the nickname of Yankees, which was initially coined by New York Press
, and was officially named the New York Yankees
