Each game lasts for two 30 minute periods with a break in between of ten minutes. If the game ends in a tie there are two 5-minute over time periods. In the game players can only hold the ball for 3 seconds before doing anything with it.

Men's field handball was played at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin at the special request of Adolf Hitler. It was removed from the list of sports, to return as team handball in 1972 for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Women's team handball was added as an Olympic discipline at the 1976 Summer Olympics. The modern game of handball was first played towards the end of the 19th century in Denmark, Germany and Sweden. Recognition of field handball based on the games of snatch ball and Konrad Koch occurred at the turn of the century. G. Wallstr?m introduced Sweden to the sport of handball in 1910.
