The Reading Phillies is a minor league baseball team based in Reading, Pennsylvania. Commonly known as R-Phillies, they are an Eastern League team playing in its Eastern division, and have been the Eastern League champions four times. Reading Phillies are the AA affiliates of the Philadelphia Phillies, the major league baseball team.

Reading’s first baseball team called Reading Athletic club was formed in 1858. In 1883, it became a member of the Interstate Association and its name was changed in to Reading Actives; and again in 1897 to the Reading Coal Heavers. The first female professional baseball player in the world, Lizzie Arlington, played for them for a couple of years. Reading Coal Heavers was wound up in 1900. In 1907, the Class-B Tri-State League team York White Roses became the Reading Pretzels after they moved to Reading. The First World War caused the league to be called off. Reading joined the Class-AA International League in 1919 and over the next fifteen years played as Reading Coal Barons, Reading Marines, Reading Aces and Reading Keystones. In 1933, the Reading Red Sox became the Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, but two years later the team moved out of Reading.

Reading got its next franchise, the Reading Chicks, five years later. Reading Chicks was an unaffiliated team in the Class-B Interstate League and in 1941 it joined the Brooklyn Dodgers’to form Reading Brooks, but the partnership lasted only a season. Reading did not have a team for the next decade, till the Wilkes Barre Indians came to Reading in 1952 and were called the Reading Indians. This team left in 1961 and were replaced a year later by the Williamsport Grays. Reading did not have a baseball team and therefore in 1967 the minor league baseball franchise Reading Phillies was created. Their first game was played against the York White Roses at the Municipal Stadium in April, 1967.

Since its start in 1967, Reading Phillies has been an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies and this partnership is still unbroken. This is the record for the longest present affiliation in Minor League Baseball. The relationship became even stronger in 2008 when the Philadelphia Phillies purchased the major interest in the Reading Phillies franchise. The Reading Phillies uniforms are also similar to the Philadelphia Phillies and the team colors are red, navy blue, light blue and bubble gum.

The Reading Phillies play their home games at the First Energy Stadium. Built in 1951, it was originally called the Reading Municipal Memorial Stadium. More than ten million people have attended games here, which is record for a stadium that has never hosted a major league baseball team. The stadium is purpose built for baseball only and at present this stadium can now seat up to nine thousand spectators. In 2006 it was adjudged by the Minor League News to be second best baseball stadium and also won the first Ballpark of the Year Award in 2002. It currently offers free parking for all the fans.

The Reading Phillies have been the Eastern League champions four times, winning the Championship in 1968, 1973 and 1995 and were co-champions in 2001. In 1995 and 2000 they also won the Division title . They were also awarded the John H. Johnson President's Trophy in 2003 for being the most complete franchise in Minor League Baseball.
