Altar Boyz is a spectacular American comedy musical with music by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker, who also wrote its lyrics. The musical is based upon a book by Kevin Del Aguila and has seen several productions since its debut at the NY Music Theatre Festival in 2004. It has debuted on Off Broadway, gone on a three year long US Tour, premiered Korean and Hungarian productions and seen productions in Chicago city, amongst many more. Altar Boyz revolves around a fictional band from Ohio, a Christian boy band and tells their story in the shape of a hilarious musical comedy. It revolves around the popularity in American culture of Christian music, as well as that of boy bands. It premiered on Off Broadway in 2005 and ran until 2010, seeing over two thousand performances, ranking it as the ninth Longest Running Musical of All Time on Off Broadway. The story itself takes place during the fictional boy band’s last concert of their tour, and tells the stories of each of the band’s members, Mathew, Luke, Juan, Mark and Abraham, in a humorous way that has left thousands laughing.
Altar Boyz first production was at the 47th Street Theatre, known also as the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, in the New York Music Festival in 2004. It was choreographed by Christopher Gattelli and directed by Stafford Arima. It featured a star studded cast, with Mathew played by Cheyenne Jackson, Mark played by Tyler Maynard, Luke played by Andy Karl, Juan played by Ryan Duncan and Abraham played by David Josefsberg. Marc Kudisch also starred in the musical, playing the role of G.O.D. Following several performances as part of the musical, sixteen preview performances of the Off Broadway production occurred.
On Off Broadway, this musical comedy premiered at Dodger Stages, today known as New World Stages, in 2005. It featured the same cast as the New York Music Festival production, except for the role of Mathew being played by Scott Porter and the role of G.O.D played by Shadoe Stevens. This production would go on to become the ninth longest running, after over two thousand shows. Touring productions of the musical has also been held in the US, first in 2007 and then again in 2008 and 2009.  
A number of resident productions have also been stages, in Chicago and in many other countries of the world including Korea, Finland, Hungary, the Philippines, Australia and Japan. In 2013, the musical was also performed during the Adelaide Fringe. The musical has received a large number of awards and award nominations. This includes  Outer Critics Circle Award for the Best Off Broadway Musical, Drama Desk Award nominations for the Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical, Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Lyrics, Outstanding Book of a Musical and Outstanding Orchestrations.
It has also received the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Choreography and nominations in the Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Featured Actor and Outstanding Sound Design.
It is also the recipient of the Drama League Award nomination for the Distinguished Production of a Musical and Distinguished Performance Award. It has also won the Theatre World Award. The official cast recording of the musical was released by Ghostlight Records in 2005 to much critical and commercial acclaim.
