American Ballet Theatre Le Corsaire is a ballet staged by a company that was funded back in 1937 by Mikhail Mordkin. Its main venue is the Metropolitan Opera House, located the famous Lincoln Center in New York City. Its present artistic director is Kevin McKenzie and it also operates the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. Each year, it performs a season eight weeks long at the Metropolitan Opera House and then tours other venues spread out all over the world. Today, it is regarded as one of the greatest ballet companies in the world and has come a long way since its founded. It has been dubbed America's National Ballet Company by the US Congress.

It was founded after Mikhail Mordkin, a member of the Bolshoi Ballet, left Russia following the October Revolution. In 1924, he staged the first ever American production of Swan Lake and then founded the Mordkin Ballet in 1937 with a number of his students with one of them, Lucia Chase, at the prima ballerina. In 1939, Richard Pleasant joined the company as manager and, together with Lucia Chase, turned the group into a full fledged ballet company with a gallery of dance envisioned as a living museum of dance to American, British and Russian ballet.

Lucia Chase would then go on to develop a large number of full length ballets that are produced to date by the company. In 1945, Oliver Smith joined the company and in 1957, its name was changed to the American Ballet Theatre. It continued staging famous ballets for the sixties and seventies, moving on to recruiting the best ballet stars in the US. In 1977, the company began staging ballets at the Metropolitan Opera House, which became its official venue. Mikhail Baryshnikov then joined the company in 1980 as the artistic director. In 1989, Oliver Smith and Jane Hermann became the artistic directors of the ballet company, followed by Kevin McKenzie in 1992.

Today, this is a ballet company that has been associated with and worked with the greatest choreographers in the world. This includes Antony Tudor, who was also the company’s resident choreographer, Agnes de Mille, George Balanchine, Michel Fokine, Adolph Bolm, Léonide Massine, Jerome Robbins, Bronislava Nijinska, Twyla Tharp, and Alvin Ailey. Its production of The Nutcracker was shown on TV in 1976 and has since then become a broadcast classic. In 2004, it also founded the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in honor of the late First Lady. The school also has its own company, the ABT Studio Company, which features twelve young dancers, who embody what the American Ballet Theatre stands for. This production, Le Corsaire, is thus one to enjoy live now by buying American Ballet Theatre Le Corsaire tickets.
