The American Ballet Theatre usually performs an eight week season each year at the Metropolitan Opera House Lincoln Center. The rest of the year, it goes on world tours as well as American tours to some of the greatest ballet destinations and venues in the world. Formed by Mikhail Mordkin in the thirties, it is now hailed as one of the best classical ballet companies in the world. This isn’t just an empty title but a title the ballet company has earned with even the United States Congress recognizing it and labeling is America’s National Ballet Company, a honor no other company has achieved at the same time. Such a legendary ballet therefore has a rich history and legacy behind it that begun back at the start of the twentieth century when Mikhail Mordkin defected from Russia during the Russian Revolution.

Formely a dancer at the Bolshoi Ballet, he moved to the US in 1924 and organized the first ever production of the one of the greatest ballets today, Swan Lake. In 1937, he founded the Mordkin Ballet with Lucia Chase, one of his students from a New York school he had started, joining as the prima ballerina. In 1939, Richard Pleasant was invited on board the company after his career as a Hollywood agent. Together with Lucia Chase, the company was transformed into a gallery of dance that blended in American, Russian and British styles. The ballet company was then renamed as the Ballet Theatre and Lucia Chase began work on a proper repertoire including popular ballet productions and original ballets. In 1945, Oliver Smith was welcomed on board and he became the co-director of the Ballet Theatre alongside Lucia Chase.

In 1957, Ballet Theatre was renamed as the American Ballet Theatre and rose to new heights during the sixties and the seventies, recruiting more and more ballet stars as time passed. In 1977, it joined the Lincoln Center’s Metropolitan Opera House which became its official home. Three years later, Mikhail Baryshnikov joined the company as the artistic director and he was responsible for leading the company to a new direction by restaging and refurbishing many classical ballets. In 1989, Jane Hermann along with Oliver Smith became the company’s new artistic directors and in 1992, Kevin McKenzie joined the company as the new artistic director, leading the company through an era of traditional ballet and financial struggles. In 2004, he founded the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. He also made Alexei Ratmansky as the artist in residence after the company had been left many years without an in-house choreographer, leading the ballet to a new age that continues even today.

Today, the American Ballet Theatre is a part of the history and legacy of American ballet. It has been home to legends such as Antony Tudor and Agnes de Mille with choreographers such as George Balanchine working on ballets exclusively for the company. Its production of The Nutcracker was televised all over American in 1976 and is today a broadcast classic; its live performances are much more mind blowing and definitely ones to catch live for fans of classic ballet after grabbing hold of American Ballet Theatre tickets.
