The dance show, Burn the Floor
is the brain child of Harley Medcalf
who is among the top choreographers and directors in the world. Medcalf, over a period of thirty nine years, has worked with some of the greatest artists of all times which include Marlene Dietrich, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel, Sarah Brightman, Billy Connolly, Michael Crawford, Queen, Meat Loaf, Michael Flatley, Kenny G, and Lionel Richie. He conceived the idea at the birthday party of Elton John. During this party, sixteen dancers performed various sequences which triggered Medcalf’s creativity. And he went on to bring this to fruition. He conceptualized the whole show in 1999. It became the first touring ballroom dance. Burn the Floor
now epitomizes competitive ballroom dancing which is sometimes referred to as dancesport. Based on the international style of ballroom dancing, the show consists of two sets of dances. Each set contains five numbers. The first set involves the standard dances: the Tango, the Waltz, the Viennese Waltz, the Foxtrot and the Quickstep. The Waltz is one of the most popular dances since the eighteenth century with a step-step-close pattern. The Viennese Waltz was initially was a peasant dance in France but it became all the rage in Vienna during the 1800s. The Tango which originated in the South American country of Argentina became an international sensation in the 1930s. Its walking steps, staccato action and proud posture were popularly performed in ballrooms all over the world. The Foxtrot on the other hand uses smooth gliding steps. The Quickstep is similar to foxtrot with influences of the Charleston dance and ragtime music.
The second set of dances of the show involves Latin dances: the Cha Cha, the Samba, Paso Doble, the Rumba and the Jive. The Cha Cha is a Cuban dance which gained popularity in the 1950s. It is a playful, flirty dance which is a branch of the triple mambo. The Samba originated in Brazil and is an intricate, festive dance. Paso Doble was born from the bullfighting custom in Spain. It is a stylized dance which uses marching steps. The Rumba like the Cha Cha is a Cuban dance with slow and sensuous movements. The last of the dances of Burn the Floor
is the Jive which is based on African American music. It is jazzy and upbeat.
The dancers who will be performing in the show come from around the world. They are highly trained. Some of the well-known faces who will be taking part in the dances are stars like Mary Murphy, one of the three judges on the famous program So You Think You Can Dance, Vaidas Skimelis and the hit, sizzling couple, Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff. They will perform on classic hits and rocking songs such as "Jump Jive an' Then You Wail," "Top Hat, White Tie and Tails," "Zoot Suit Riot," "Would You...?" and "Passionata." Thus, Burn the Floor
