Between fragility and strength, smiles and laughter, harmony and turmoil, Kooza basically explores the themes of identity, fear, power and recognition. It is set in a very exotic and electrifying visual world, filled with chills, thrills, audacity and surprises. Kooza is a widely known touring circus produced by the famous Cirque du Soleil, and first premiered in Canada in April 2007. The name comes from "koza" the Sanskrit word which means "box".
Cirque du Soleil Kooza combines 2 main circus traditions; clowns and acrobatic performances. The talented David Shiner wrote and directed this show. He previously performed in another Cirque du Soleil's show called Nouvelle Experience
. So his skill as a circus clown as well as his previous works with Switzerland’s and Germany’s circuses led him towards Kooza. It’s one of twenty-one Cirque creations around the globe, including 7 resident shows in Vegas and also La Nouba
Kooza’s stage has been designed by Canadian artist Staphane Roy. The stage is a public square which transforms into a large circus ring with very grand audience sight lines. "Bataclan", the show’s travelling tower is a major component of the production. Bataclan’s decoration takes inspiration from Pakistani buses along with Indian jewelry and Hindu culture. Moreover, the stage surface has a night sky décor and the central ring also depicts a graphic picture of Montreal’s nocturnal sky. The show’s melodies have been inspired by Indian music and western pop, ranging from 1970 funk to orchestral music, including movie scores from 1940s-1950s.
In addition, Marie Chantale Vaillancourt, the production’s costume designer reflects the circus’s traditional acrobatics and clowning with colors very much in harmony with customary gold, white and red tones. The costumes are made from the view point of "Innocent", the central character. The striped outfit is made to look ill-fitted with very long sleeves and too short pants lags, portraying the character’s naivety. In comparison, the other lead character "The Trickster" is flawlessly dressed. The characters’ inspiration is taken from comic book, graphic novels and Eastern European and Indian art. Since Kooza is perceived as the "Innocent" one, most of the dresses depict ideas of kids’ stories, toys and soldiers.
At the Cirque du Soleil Kooza event, there are 10 acrobatic acts supported by other smaller performances which develop the story. The major acts include Wheel of Death, Contortion, Unicycle Duo, Teeterboard, High Wire, Balancing on Chairs, Charivari, Solo Trapeze, Hand to Hand, and Hoops Manipulation. Besides, amongst other performers in the show and apart from Innocent and The Trickster, there are five more characters that are dominant in the storyline. They include Bad Dog, The Pickpocket, The King, Heimloss and The Clowns.
Furthermore, the costumes are incredibly designed to transformation. For instance, the Charivari
actors have the control on their fingertips; they can change their get-ups from golden to red in a split second. The metamorphosis special effects are inspired by magicians and quick-change artists. The show consists of around 1080 wardrobe pieces, with over 175 outfits and 160 hats, including numerous props, shoes and wigs etc. The multinational cast is another interesting feature of the sh0w. The tent carry’s the entire world in it, which for one evening at least, is quite a fun place to be at. Cirque du Soleil Kooza
