The Columnist was written by David Auburn. He is a well-known American playwright. He studied playwriting at the Julliard School under the tutelage of noted playwrights and dramatists Christopher Durang and Marsha Norman. His short play titled What Do You Believe About The Future? also earned him recognition. He then wrote a full length play called ‘Skyscraper’ which was produced on Broadway in 1997. However, his best known work is his play ‘Proof’ in 2000 for which he won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as a Tony Award in the "Best Play" category. The Columnist is his next big achievement. It is going to have a world premiere in 2012. The Manhattan Theatre Club is producing it on Broadway. It will run from April 3 to June 3, 2012.

The director of the play is Daniel Sullivan. He is a well-known figure in the theatrical circles. He has worked with some of the prominent playwrights. His directorial debut was ‘Scenes from American Life’ which was written by A.R. Gurney. Sullivan received a Drama Desk Award for his direction. Some of the other Drama Desk Awards include "Most Promising Director" for his work in Suggs. His Drama Desk Award nominations include "Best Direction of a Play" for The Heidi Chronicles (1989), The Sisters Rosensweig (1993), Dinner with Friends (2000) and Stuff Happens (2006). His other accolades include a Tony Award which he won for his direction of Auburn’s play Proof (2001). Thus the team of Auburn and Sullivan is not new and they have created magic before. So a lot is expected from them where the Columnist is concerned. What is more important is the certainty that they will deliver one of the best theatrical productions ever to have been staged on Broadway.

Another factor that ensures the success of the Columnist is its veteran cast. The leading of the columnist is to be played by John Lithgow, a prolific American actor. He became an A-list actor when he received successive Academy Award nominations for his "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" for the films The World According to Garp in 1982 and Terms of Endearment in 1983. His stage successes include Tony Award for "Best Leading Actor" for his work in the musical ‘Sweet Smell of Success’ and a Tony Award nomination in the same category for his acting in ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’. On the whole, he is the winner of two Tony Awards, five Emmys, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, one American Comedy Award and two Golden Globes. Therefore, there is no doubt about his acting prowess. What makes him perfect for the role of the columnist is his ability to understand even the most twisted intricacies of a character. He will show the protagonist’s innate wickedness to perfection.
Now, the last factor which is going to hold onto your seats till the last moment is the storyline of the Columnist.  It is based on the real life of the prominent columnist of the mid 20th Century, Joseph Alsop. Lithgow’s plays Alsop who was a well-liked and yet feared journalist in the political circles of the US. He belonged to a political family himself and knew how it worked. However, in the 1960s and 70s, American culture underwent a rapid change which embroiled Alsop in a controversy that was not just political but deeply personal.

These twists and turns which are one minute political and the other minute personal will leave you on the edges of your seats. Great acting and direction will leave you wanting for more. A proof of its success is that Lithgow has already been nominated for his role in the Columnist. The Columnist tickets are coveted commodities now.
