Work on Nine the musical began back in 1973. Maury Yeston was fond of the original movie as a teenager and soon that turned into an obsession, as stated in a New York Times interview. Following this, he started work on the musical’s book in 1977, working with director Tommy Tune. This script was however found lacking and so Arthur Kopit was brought on board to write a new script, in 1981, working with Maury Yeston. At the same time, Maury Yeston had completed the musical score and so the musical was eventually premiered on Broadway in 1982, with many booking Nine the musical show tickets to catch it live.
