Nine the musical follows the story of movie director Guido Contini, a character based upon the movie’s own director, during his fortieth year of life and a midlife crisis. At this time, his creativity is dampening and he finds himself in the middle of a web of romance and its difficulties. It is set during the cities in Venice, Italy. The very first production of this musical on Broadway ran for more than seven hundred performances and starred Raul Julia as Guido Contini. It won a mind blowing five Tony Awards including that for the Best Musical and the Best Score.

Work on Nine the musical began back in 1973. Maury Yeston was fond of the original movie as a teenager and soon that turned into an obsession, as stated in a New York Times interview. Following this, he started work on the musical’s book in 1977, working with director Tommy Tune. This script was however found lacking and so Arthur Kopit was brought on board to write a new script, in 1981, working with Maury Yeston. At the same time, Maury Yeston had completed the musical score and so the musical was eventually premiered on Broadway in 1982, with many booking Nine the musical show tickets to catch it live.
