The music and melody of the Academy Award winning musical film Once is still going strong in the stage musical adaptation of the hit movie. Once was developed for stage by Enda Walsh who won a Tony Award for his work on the production. It stars two of the most promising new Broadway talents Steve Kazee and Crisitin Milioti. The extrememly handsome Kazee is a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts where he studied acting and the beautiful Milioti has appeared in popular shows like 30 Rock and The Sopranos. These two main stars of the show are supported by a very talented cast which features the stunning Elizabeth and the seasoned David Patrick Kelly.
The story of the musical is about an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant with an equal passion for music who are drawn to each other by their common love for music. Together they create beautiful music and over the course of one week experience a complicated romance and resulting emotions.
Before its debut on the Broadway, Once was showcased at the New York Theater Workshop in December 2011 for slightly over than a month. On Broadway the musical made its debut in February 2012. The show received widespread praise for the minimalist set design, the direction by John Tiffany and choreography by Steven Hoggett. Both Steven and John have known each other since 1987 and together they took many creative decisions to make the musical different from the movie which paid off in the end. During early stages of development, several works in the show featured a lot of choreography, but was later eliminated after a joint decision by Tiffany and Hoggett. The production has been noted for using its main cast for orchestra as well, and upon exit each actor would sit to the side of the stage and join his fellow actors in playing the music.
When the creators of the Once musical were playing with the idea of turning the critically acclaimed and commercially successful film into a stage musical, it seemed natural to them to keep a lot of the film’s music, as the music of the film was its main highlight. Because of this several of the songs from the film’s soundtrack have made it to the stage version as well. The musical numbers include the Academy Award winning song Falling Slowly which was written by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová in collaboration. The duo are also responsible for mostsongs in the production like Leave, If You Want Me, Say It To Me Now, The Moon, When Your Mind’s Made Up, The Hill, The North Strand and Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy. Two new songs which appear in the stage production are Abandoned in Bandon and Gold. The former was written by Andy Taylor, Martin Lowe and Enda Walsh and the latter was composed by Fergus O'Farrell. Once upon its debut on Broadway saw tremendous praise and acclaim coming its way.
Critics and audiences alike were won over by the simplicity of the production design, the warmth of the story, the beauty of performances and above all the melodiousness of its music. The production received eleven Tony Award nominations and won the Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Direction, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design. In addition the musical also received six Drama Desk Award nominations and won the award for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Orchestrations and Outstanding Music and Lyrics.
