South Pacific Tickets

A thrilling and exultant musical play as well as an utterly captivating work of theatrical art, South Pacific is considered as one of the greatest musicals in history. The musical deals with the lives of U.S. military men and nurses and the natives of the Polynesian Island during World War II. It is one of those musicals which strike in your mind when you think of a full blown, traditional Broadway production. The story is based on two short stories by James A. Michener from his book titled 'Tales of the South Pacific'.

In the musical South Pacific, the issue of racial prejudice is sensitively and candidly explored. It primarily revolves around three topics: firstly, frustrations of soldiers as they waited to enter World War II against Japan, secondly, the love story between its two main charactiers Emille and Nellie Forubush, and thirdly, the issue of xenophobia. The production focuses on two couples whose happiness is threatened by the harshness of war and their own prejudices.

U.S. Navy nurse Nellie has fallen in love with local plantation owner Emile while Lt. Joe Cable falls in love with the young local Liat. Before both truly give of themselves, Nellie and Joe must resolve their own issues of racism. Can love overcome all differences and will these star-crossed lovers be consumed by life's realities? The first out-of-town trial for South Pacific started on March 7, 1949, in New Haven, Connecticut. Mary Martin was playing for Nellie. Having staged successfully, Mark Todd who was a leading theatre critic, told Mary Martin not to feature the musical in New York Theaters. Martin was taken aback and asked him why, and Todd replied that the Musical was too good for them.

The show was then featured in Boston, where it was exceptionally successful. People in Boston were so excited about the show that they shoved money under the doors of the Shubert Theatre.

The original production won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950 and several of its songs like 'Bali Ha'I', 'Some Enchanted Evening', 'Happy Talk', 'Younger than Springtime', and 'A Wonderful Guy' have become worldwide standards. The Broadway production of South Pacific won ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Libretto.

The music and lyrics of South pacific are by the legendary Rodgers and Hammerstein. Rodgers and Hammerstein is one of the most recognized theatrical teams in the Broadway industry. This is a rare opportunity to see a gem of a production in your City. Since South Pacific has not been on Broadway in almost six decades, it certainly will not be something to miss!
