The Gershwin Theatre is named after celebrated American composers George Gershwin and his brother Ira Gershwin. When opened in 1972, it was named as the Uris Theatre. Later during 1983’s Tony Awards ceremony, it was rechristened as the Gershwin Theatre to honor the Gershwin brothers. It was built with an estimated cost of $12.5 million and has served as a theater venue as well as a concert hall (for a limited period of time). Today, it is ranked among the busiest Broadway venues of USA, attracting thousands of theater lovers every year. This popularity, however, was not its hallmark from day one.

It is a known fact that Gershwin Theatre did not enjoy a good run in its initial years. The very first production, Via Galactica musical, closed here only after seven performances. Then for a two-year period, ranging from 1974 to 1976, it served as a concert hall and hosted different pop and jazz singers including Frank Sinatra, Barry Manilow, Queen, Paul Anka, Johnny Mathis and others. However, once it returned to host Broadway productions, it gradually became the favorite destination of theater lovers of New York.

Currently, Gershwin Theatre is hosting the record breaking production of Wicked the musical. Wicked has been enjoying a dream run here since October 2003, when it made its Broadway debut. Its original Broadway production at Gershwin received 3 Tony, 6 Drama Desk and a Grammy Award and went on to become the 12th longest-running show in Broadway history. By grossing $2,228,235 in just eight performances (from 26 Dec 2010 to 2 Jan 2011), it achieved the box office record for the Gershwin Theatre. The record was then broken again in the first week of 2012 and Wicked at Gershwin remained the highest weekly grosser. All in all, Wicked the musical has broken the house record at the Gershwin Theatre as many as twenty times, thus making Gershwin Theatre tickets a hot selling commodity all year round.

Apart from its blockbuster productions, Gershwin Theatre is popular because of its Art Nouveau design, its state-of-the-art facilities and the American Theatre Hall of Fame which is located in its lobby. Visitors can enjoy an exhibition of personal collections of Broadway legends that include costumes, props, opening night gifts, stage notes, and many other items. This makes Gershwin Theatre not only a venue to watch magical productions but also the center-piece of Broadway theater legacy.
